SOUTH BREWSTER COUNTY—When Sarah Whitson Bourbon of Terlingua’s Whitson Chile Products set up her booth at the 54th Annual Fancy Food Show in New York last week, she felt decidedly like the country cousin. All around were slick, colorful booths from all over the world purveying every conceivable (and not so conceivable) type of food. Her setup reflects more the craft shows, fairs and rodeos, and other events she usually attends.
Adding to the difficulty was the fact that samples of her newest product, Whitson’s Candied Heat sweet jalapeno pickle, had all been destroyed in shipping, so she was down to Whitson’s Moist Chili Seasoning and Terlingua Sweet Hots pickles to sample to the 20,000-some food people in attendance. Despite all this, the products got the attention of a very influential attendee. Kat Kinsman, Senior Editor of America OnLine’s AOL Food site, named her two products as the number one discovery on the first day of the three-day event on their site:
The Fancy Food Show attracts retailers, exporters, chefs, manufacturers, pretty much the entire food industry. Coming off the elevators you walked right into the Tuscany pavilion and passed from there, depending on your direction, to France, China, Pakistan, Bulgaria, South Africa, dozens of other countries and regions—you get the picture. The Whitson’s booth was located in the area representing the Southern U.S. Trade Association or SUSTA. Nearby was the Texas area organized by the Department of Agriculture.
Whitson’s membership in SUSTA allowed her to have a booth for much less than the going rate. While at the show Ms. Bourbon was also able to meet with trade representatives Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan, meetings also organized by SUSTA. Much courteous discourse and tasting resulted in several requests to send samples, this on the heels of a recent company meeting in New Orleans with trade reps from Taiwan who were also very interested. At present Whitson’s products are available at several locations in Texas, including HEB’s Central Market chain of high-end stores, and in Norway. Maybe before long, with shows as successful as this one, the company will start supplying the rest of the world.
