SOUTH BREWSTER COUNTY—Sarah Bourbon, owner of Terlingua’s Whitson Chile Products, has been awarded a grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture to promote her spicy products in Portugal. In March she will be participating in a trade mission to Lisbon sponsored by the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA).
“I have been a member of the Agriculture Department’s Go Texan program since my first year in business,” said Bourbon. “It has been by far the single biggest booster of the business.” Each year their GOTEPP program awards matching grants to help fund activities promoting Texas agricultural products. The grant will pay half of Bourbon’s travel expenses for the trip; it is the third grant awarded to her company.
“Back in 2007 I participated in a similar mission, this one to Central America,” remembers Bourbon. “We made presentations in Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Guatemala. It was a fascinating look at the retail and wholesale grocery business, where I made many invaluable contacts.” During this mission, SUSTA members will meet with local Portuguese buyers and tour stores and businesses. SUSTA will match U.S. companies with buyers who are particularly interested in their products. SUSTA also provides interpreters during the three-day mission.
Whitson’s products—Whitson’s Moist Chili Seasoning, Terlingua Sweet Hots pickles, Candied Heat, and Whitson’s Bee Stings Spicy Honey Mustard Salad Dressing—are available from the company web site, www.whitsonschile.com, and in Alpine at both Porter’s locations, Morrison True Value, and Front Street Books (Marathon, too). All Texas Central Market stores carry the chili seasoning, the original product developed by Bourbon’s grandfather in 1932.
